Judy Kaye triumphed in the category of Best Featured Actress in a Musical at the 2012 Tony Awards, winning for her funny turn as Estonia Dulworth in the Gershwin musical comedy Nice Work If You Can Get It.
Kaye previously won a Tony in 1988 for playing opera diva Carlotta in The Phantom of the Opera and was also nominated in 2002 for Mamma Mia! and in 2006 for the play Souvenir. Since she swings from a chandelier in Nice Work, Kaye quipped, "I guess chandeliers have been very very good for me" as she took to the stage to accept her award.
After thanking the Nice Work team (including a shout-out to the "best damn band on Broadway"), husband David Green for his "unwavering love and support," Kaye got choked up as she mentioned her father.
"I dedicate this to my dad," she said. "We lost him last week and, like me, he was a lifelong fan of the brilliance of George and Ira Gershwin. Thank you all and thank you Dad. Goodnight!"
